Some 3D to bring the colour

Hi again!
Since there hasn’t been many colour drawings of late around these parts, I thought I would show you some of the 3D stuff I’ve been doing for work. It’s nothing flash – I am no skilled 3D artist! I can barely animate let alone do character rigging or anything complicated like that.
But what I can do is kinda fun! The modelling is the best bit…..with rendering you get kind of tired of the:
*fiddle fiddle*
F9 (render frame)
Oh shoot!!
*tweak tweak*
F9
Repeat.

If you want to know more about the process, I explained it briefly here. :-D
These are some trays we needed to show off to our US offices. They wanted to see what we can do when it comes to 3D because many of them are still skeptical over there as to what it can actually benefit the company and our clients. To me, it’s logical. Why spend thousands of dollars doing research and development for new packaging without getting a few 3D mockups first (without even the need for high precision that you get from CAD software), just for a visual? It usually doesn’t cost more than an art concept and we can create literally anything the client wants to see. Then once they’re happy with the idea, get on to the nitty gritty of CAD drawings and the actual R&D (scuse any wrong terminology, I know nothing about the engineering side!!).

Sooo….we wanted to show a number of trays with different print methods and packaging variants. Behold. ;-)

And to keep up with the sketches…
Look a male!!

Here’s another drawing for the Team CHOW Tarot. The Star:

Like this one even more :-D

Bya for now!

  • Hi Esz, my bf went to a college for 3D character modelling for games. He's using Maya and erm…..3D Studio Max? Lol…bad thing is, it's very hard to break into his industry.

  • esz

Yeh it can be. Its a pretty steep learning curve plus expensive software and it's expensive to create if you're wanting to do animations. Not too much happening on a big scale in Australia I don't think!

  • Hey you know I never noticed but yes you don't often draw guys! :)

  • Tasiordog

I like this Star better, but make her body exaggerated more. Longer a bit. And I would buy the chicken if there will be more pieces in the tray :-) )

  • I know how hard 3d is, and these are fantastic!!
keep it up…. i feel like some 3d chicken and citrus now :P

  • esz

Hehehe 3D chicken would be a bit tasteless…kinda like plastic ;-)

Hi Esz, 'twas cool to finally see that red hair of yours, and to know that you're an actual person and not a robot. haur haur
-The modelling is there man, the materials look good (the settings on the glass looks nice) – I'm just wondering if GI was
turned on with the render? :) (I'm slowly getting back into Lightwave, and I use to GI everything hehe (total noob).
-Ugh, everytime I see you draw a man, I have to draw a woman.
-The CHOW pose looks cool. Perhaps take that back arch and continue it down into the thigh of her standing leg. The pose is very interesting though, I can't tell which/what direction/action she's about to do. Awesome.

(Gaaah, headache alert headache alert – Have a nice 'Stralia day)

  • esz

By GI do you mean global illumination?? Didn't know it was a nooby thing to do! Haven't had much training. Please do enlighten me :-D

  • (I reckon it's a noob thing to do :D ) There are tricks such as the half dome of lights to achieve somewhat the same effect with less render time. Lighting and rendering I've never really gotten any more in-depth than pressing F9 ^_^

  • esz

ooooh this is all news to me! If it redues render time then I am happy. Shall give it a go today!
