Sewing – Simplicity 8478 Scalloped Dress

Sunday, September 4th, 2011

Hi All!!

Here’s the latest sewing project all finished. I’ve jumped ahead a couple cos this wasn’t the one I was intending to show you, but I was wearing this Saturday (and Friday haha) so I took pics of this instead. :-D This is possibly the quickest dress I’ve ever made, and I even lined the bodice – so if you skipped that, it’s SUPER easy….That said, I think lining is quicker than facings.

Some Notes:

    • It’s made from a sheet – Possibly! Nicole from Circa thinks it might not be as the cotton is fairly thick.
    • I shortened it a bit
    • I didn’t add the scallops on the bottom because I can’t figure out how to shorten the circle skirt without changing the circumference of the hem, thus needing to change the pattern piece for the scallops (hard to explain!)
    • Only the bodice is lined
    • This has a side zipper but it isn’t closed at the top so it’s really easy to get into.
    • It’s the perfect, comfy summer dress!
    • I didn’t need to change the pattern at all except the length :-D

(look at the surge of kitties hehehee)

After reading Elyse’s post on her first Spring sewing project, I notice that I have wrinkles on the bodice of my dress too. I answered her question by saying it could be the lining competing for space…Which could also be the case for my dress as I used the same size lining as the outer pieces. I’m not sure? It doesn’t bother me too much though.

Guess what? I made the green belt I’m wearing too :-) Using a kit from A Fashionable Stitch, I covered the belt backing in some green fabric and hand-sewed it all together. Covering the buckle was a bit fiddly though. It comes with a sticky piece of card that you attach your fabric to and then the other side sticks to the metal front of the buckle. Then you jam in the bottom of the buckle with some pliers. I botched it a little bit but you can’t really tell when I’m wearing it. Then I had to rush out and buy an awl and the Mr helped me bash in the eyelets.
I think I’ll be making simpler slide belts next – eyelets are a PITA.
I’m majorly in love with that green fabric I used. It’s such a perfect shade – and matches my dress so well. I have enough left to make a skirt…And the pattern is coming in the mail so it should hopefully arrive shortly.

After making this dress I think I’m going to hold off on all the DRESSES for a while. Need to make lots more separates – so skirts and tops for my new job (staring tomorrow!!! Eeeep)…but first the ROBE in pink seersucker – or plissé – I’m not sure which it is actually. Yes, there is a difference. More on that later ;-P

Okay so I better run!!

It’s mine!!

Melbourne Spring Fashion Week stuff..

Sunday, September 5th, 2010

Okay so I’ve been gone a while…and still don’t have much content for you….

But my big news from the other day was that I was going to take part in Melbourne Spring Fashion Week as a model for Super Kawaii Mama’s Vintage Glamour presentations. Woo, what a mouthful! But WOW was it fun! Not too many photos as yet so I’ll wait to post the big write-up when we all get the professional pics through.

More info (and a much better & more timely post than this) over at Super Kawaii Mama :-)

Should be able to FINALLY finish the drawing I’m working on tomorrow so YES, I will have some art up here eventually. Raaar I SUCK!!

Some art for a change…

Team CHOW is back in full swing. REALLY pushing it for time. A bit over ten days to pull two finished pieces out of my butt??? WORK HARD ESZ!!!

Not to mention my work for others which I am pottering away on.
Sooo here’s the run down of the last couple of days. I have been sketching quite a bit but today was the only day where I really got anywhere. First….what I started on the train. Wish they wouldn’t sway around so much – hard to keep the pencil straight when drawing tiny lines.

Sketch from a few days ago for one of my clients….For a blog header. Kinda happy with this. Just a matter of getting around to doing the digital.

And finally some tests for Team CHOW. The Star. Poses referenced from a book lent off my workmate (Hi – see I AM drawing!! ;-P) I like most of this ‘cept the head. Ugh. Kind of needs clothes too.

Take 2. Much better (though I did draw this first hehe). The arm is a bit short and the head too big I know shuddup. I kind of like big heads though hehehehe. Anyways….I’m thinkin Hippy Boho Chick for The Star cos it’s meant to represent Aquarius and we’re supposed to be pretty free spirited yada yada. I just like flowing stuff – hair, clothes, jewelry etc. Could definitely use this for the final.
Dreading trying to draw this digitally. If only I could find $3K lying around somewhere…..

That’s all for now. Better get back to finishing off my other commission. :-D

Fashion instead of art? What’s going on here?

While I have not really been doing a lot of drawing this past week that I am in Tasmania, I have found the time to do a teeny bit of vintage hunting.

This means that I am going to be extra super duper busy on the drawing/design front when I arrive back in Melbourne tomorrow. I have a bazillion things to do. One of those being that I am FINALLY going to get some hosting and move to WordPress. So as of next week there will be a transition period at Kitty’s Drawings and I will be guiding you towards my new site….hopefully without any hiccups along the way. I expect to have it up and running by the end of next week so stay tuned for a new link.

But back to the fashion stuff eh?
I found the below shoes at the Huonville St Vinnies store…amongst a not very impressive collection of second hand shoes. These are Bruno Magli cream pumps – 100% leather and made in Italy. With brand new heels and not a sign of a scuff! For how much you ask?

$6

Yep thats SIX Australian Dollars! Heh! Score!
These will go nicely with the cream tights I bought the other week. Now I just need to find a cream coloured belt. I think I will be going on an accessories hunt when I’m back home as I am severely lacking in a few things. I have a bad habit of buying too many dresses and not enough accessories.

I hope you all don’t mind these fashion related posts. It is truly one of my biggest obsessions…and while I don’t claim to be a fashionista or anywhere in the league of Super Kawaii Mama, I do love dressing up and wearing pretty things. My style is coming along slowly and I’ve made a few big leaps in the past year or so.

With the new blog I will start to categorize posts and introduce a bit more routine for you all. With some of my clothing purchases included too if no one finds them too painfully boring. Hehe :-D

And I haven’t forgotten about the letterpress photos. I will leave that til I get back as image heavy posts are a bit of a struggle on my Mum’s old Mac.
