Design Work – RiskCloud.net

Sunday, November 13th, 2011

Hi Everyone!
As promised, here is some ART – omg FINALLY. Hahah ;-P

This is a design I did for a company that my partner is involved with. They are having a risk management conference quite soon and needed an eye-popping handout that would go with the visitors welcome pack given to conference attendees. The theme of the conference was psychedelic 60′s! Crazy-cool! There I was thinking that risk management was kind of dry and would need sleek and minimal design. Not so!

Thankfully, their printer specialises in packaging and boxes etc so my idea for a fold up card was feasible. I thought something 3D would stand out amongst anything else in the welcome pack and my client gave me a lot of freedom to do what I wanted. Time being a major constraint of course. I did a small mock-up which got approved and then it was time to get cracking on the illustration.

In typical Esz fashion, I bit off more than I could chew, my plans being grander than the time would allow me to complete such ideas. But in the end I think I managed pretty good. The drawing took up the bulk of the time of course. I’m pretty sure my client is happy (I hope!!) and hope to see the finished result soon. I will post that if/when I get a copy so you can see how it’s supposed to stand up.

I used Corel Painter for the illustration (the mockups were done by hand!) and Adobe Illustrator for the layout.

Next up – More sewing. I’m fairly caught up now on blog-worthy sewing projects. I made a big leap yesterday actually spent some money on some NEW fabric. It is destined to become a dress to wear to a friends wedding. Which is only three weeks away. Cue major panic. BUT – it’s a fairly simple design so I hope I can knock it out quickly. I will start on the ‘wearable muslin’ today and have a go at the proper dress next week. The fear of cutting into something that I actually paid more than $4 a piece for is kinda daunting. FYI, I bought 3m dark green taffeta, 1.5m light green taffeta with black flocked polka dots for contrast bow, and 1.5m pale green silk for the lining….total, $43 which is still kinda cheap for a formal dress isn’t it? The design will be a knee length wiggle dress so I’m hoping I was generous enough with my fabric and have plenty to cover any mistakes. And maybe enough of that dark green taffeta for another project!

That’s about all for now. I better get back to sewing!

Where I inadvertently draw Cate Blanchett…

Tuesday, July 12th, 2011

Hiiii!

Soooo I have a drawing for you. A very old drawing. One I started at the end of January to be exact. It’s been hanging around that long and I’m finally sick of it enough to call it done. But – its DONE. It could be a lot better yes…I could have added a whole bunch more pixels in there and got fiddly with the details…..

I’m still kinda hung up on the piece I’m working on now though – and this being unfinished was bothering me. So here it is.

teal-profile-final

Inadvertently you ask? Well I’d found the reference on Tumblr somewhere which had no text to explain who it was. I thought “It kinda looks like Cate Blanchett”. I wouldn’t make a good paparazzo would I? Haha ;-) Derp!

I do like these colours though. And I don’t know how I have my colour settings set up – but when I work in Corel Painter, the image is a lot lighter, so when it gets to Photoshop for my final touches (signature, that’s about all really), the colours become super saturated. Painter, I think is the odd one out in this chain but I like it this way.

I’m still stressing about my creative “skillz” – too scared to set my own projects where I can really explore different methods of drawing and I dunno – just letting go. Maybe I should jump back into the ConceptArt.org challenges. They’ve set up a new section called Illustration of the Week (IOW) which looks promising.

Anyways…I best be off. :-D

Design work – ISR Matrix

Thursday, January 20th, 2011

Hi Everyone!

A few months ago I helped Jonny’s mate out with some flyers and posters for I think, Tactical Week. It’s one of those expo things for security professionals and people in the biz of being tough.  I had the logo (the shields) and the website to use as inspiration/resources for the DL sized flyer and larger posters to hang on the walls of the exhibit.

All done in a very short time-frame. Only had a couple of days to do the work plus revisions (of which there weren’t many).

I’m pretty proud of these cos they turned out how I imagined them.

Click to make larger cos they’re a bit skinny :-) (oooh they’re blurry whoops – cant be bothered fixing)
Posters:

and the flyer:

I’m also doing an ad for them at the mo which will go in some Aussie security mags – its got a WHOLE lot more info to cram into a smaller space. Fun!
But you don’t get to see that yet ;-)

Sorry if I’m killing all your bandwidth peeps – do my pics take too long to load? If so I can make them smaller.

Other news – I made another dress. Using a Vogue vintage re-isssue design. So basically a vintage design but new pattern. I rushed it and the bodice was WAY too big….I was lazy and didn’t check it til after I put the lining in so the quick fix I did is a bit dodgy. A lot dodgy. But hey – the fabric is nice and it doesn’t look soooo bad. I took a look in the Salvos today and found about 5m of a khaki cotton drill for $4 that I might use to make another version of the dress. I’ll take more care this time and see if I can shrink it a lot more to fit me.

Ehhh I better go make some dinner now. Seeyas!

House tour! Well, some of it

Sunday, December 12th, 2010

Hi everyone!

I thought today I would show you all my house. Since I’m always rabbiting on about how awesome it is and I don’t even have any photos. We moved in last October – renting of course – I could never afford to buy a house like this!
When we walked in we were all “OMG” – I was running around saying “eeeee I LOVE it LOVE it want want want”.
We were mega lucky because the Saturday we went to inspect, it was Grand Final day (massive sporting event “football” for my overseas readers – pah! I have little regard for sport ;-) ) so there was no one around. Only two other people came through that day and we managed to schmooze the real estate agent. He even gave us the keys that weekend and told us to show our friends around and come sign the lease on Monday.
So when we went to sign all the papers he tells us that he had over 14 emails asking to come see the property because they were too busy watching “footy” when the open for inspection was. Well – you snooze you lose! Ha!

Onto the tour – Let’s preface this by saying I’m only showing you a fraction of the house. The main bedroom is nowhere near ‘display quality’ as yet and the second bedroom is an utter shambles right now on account of my sewing projects strewn all over the bed.
The rest are the rooms we use most often and a part of the way to being decorated in how we like. All these white walls we constantly need MOAR ART to hang on them.

I’m really not much of a home stylist either so I know there’s all kinds of pics here that could be presented better.

K – I’ve tried to put everything in some semblance of order. The French doors lead out to the courtyard and the window is really high and arched – too high to photograph. It reaches well into the second storey. We have two mezzanine floors above the ground floor :-) Puss likes to sticky-beak and follow me around the house so she’s in quite a few of these photos! The pic on the right is the entryway. There’s a powder-room on the left and the garage on the right. This view looks towards the inside of the building. Picture a big barn with a shared driveway down the middle and all the apartments branching off.  Bamboo floorboards which are nice and quiet compared to hardwood :-)

Web

Boof relaxing (furring) on the couch. That’s his favourite spot and he gets rather upset if you sit in it. The couch set I scored off eBay for $90! Freshly re-upholstered too – great colour. They’re supposed to be Parker …they look it. If they are, then I really really did score a bargain!

boof-on-couch

Dodgy blurry photo. All these are natural light btw – That’s what I love most about this house – so much light!
Also, the beginnings of our art collection. All from Outre Gallery hehe. We plan to cover both walls eventually. Excuse the vacuum cleaner in the corner *ahem*

lounge-02

The steamer trunk is another eBay find. I won the auction for $150 but the guy dropped his price to $50 after telling us that it had woodworm holes. No matter, it’s great as a coffee table hehe. I really should move that box eh, doesn’t look good there does it.  See – not a stylist at all!
Abstract wooden form there is a piece Dad made and gifted to Jonny :-)

lounge-04

One of our Expedit bookshelves. They’re so handy! Few knick-knacks and models…Playstation….etc ;-)

lounge-03

My lovely kitchen. Which is awesome. Except no pantry – see? Kinda annoying. I need to get my butt into gear and design something for dad to build. It needs to be enclosed as that shelf has everything rather precariously balanced. And look – dishwasher!! Been a while since I had a dishwasher before we moved here. I hate doing dishes! Still need to do some of course but its that much more tolerable to have a machine do the majority of the work.

kitchen-02

My Ikea stainless steel bench. Another thing this house lacks is bench space. So I “needed” this. Its very handy. Dad made me that chopping block. And the little wooden bowl in the background there that I put sugar in.

From the kitchen to upstairs…. Curious kitty :-D

Random things….Jonny’s collection of “stuff”…on our second Expedit…

expedit-vignette

Girly art on skateboards…..And my paintings on the right. Sitting on my easel. That Dad made for me. Yes, Dad can pretty much make anything :-)
The stairs leading up to the main bedroom are behind the easel.

My jewelry sitting in a hand-tooled leather bowl I brought back from Hungary. Some paintings Jonny’s friend gave him.

expedit-upstairs

Jonny’s red “man chair” – that Puss really loves to get her claws into. Such a naughty cat!! You can see the top of the rangehood there and the window that leads to the courtyard.

red-chair

Jonny’s desk. Much more sparse than mine. He doesn’t use his computer – preferring my laptop instead. And he says he’s not a Mac convert. Bull! ;-)

jonnys-desk

My desk. You’ve seen all this before….

desk

That door leads into the second bedroom (with its own bathroom). Bookshelf packed full. No more room for anything! Jonny’s mountain-board which he doesn’t ride all that much. :-)

bookshelf

Aaaand my new sewing area. Yay! I need more storage solutions. Everywhere. I want to hide stuff – begone STUFF!!

So that’s my PAD. I love it. Great place to live even though it’s not quite magazine quality yet. Yes, I want it that way too hehe.

Nowwww – better do some drawing huh?

Can’t talk – busy sewing

Friday, December 10th, 2010

Silly season is upon us.

I’ve been going a bit crazy with the sewing….and work is mental….got back from QLD yesterday…Um….not much time for other things. Though I must finish that latest pinup.

So – to tide you all over, here is my annual Xmas card…I usually whip up one of these to use as tags for any gifts that I give. :)

Graphic design – Holy sh**, some colour!

Wednesday, June 2nd, 2010

Hello my poor neglected readers!
I’m here to bring you some colour – for the first time in ages.

This is a flyer I’ve drawn up for my parents’ vineyard (St Imre) – Mum is holding monthly Saturday dinners (I think they’re monthly right Mum??) where she cooks a meal and shares some wine and it’s all good times and awesome food. If you’re in Tassie then you need to get down there, Mum’s cooking is fantastic! And I’m not just biased, even the fussy boyfriend always loves her cooking.  I always have a bunch of things to request whenever I visit, favourites from when I was a kid that I just can’t make myself.
Worth a visit just to try proper Hungarian food – there’s not that many places you can get that in this fair country ;-)

So yeh – this is the flyer I will be printing off which will be available around parts of Tas. It didn’t take me too long as I can’t be my slackie self with this one. I’m sure the design will change over time but Mum loves it so that makes me happy. Yay!

Here’s a link to the bloggy too. :-D

Well – off to bed now to read my book. Night!

Illustrations for work

Friday, April 9th, 2010

Hellooooooo!!!
Lately I’ve had the opportunity to do some illustrations for work. It’s not often that I get to crack out the Wacom but it is getting more frequent as our clients realise we CAN do the fancy pants design and photography without having to pay two lots of people to get their work done. Yay for the customer!!
And Yay for me cos I like being able to potter about drawing while at work.

Today we had a customer that wanted a revamp of their old designs with some illustrations thrown in. I wasn’t sure if they were happy to pay the extra for full colour process plates (cyan, magenta, yellow and black – which in our kind of business costs a lot more than the printers that make magazines etc) so I kept the colours to a minimum. Just one spot colour (Pantone), black, our standard double white (for opacity on the clear bags) and varnish.

First, the illustrations. I found some stock images and redrew them into a pleasing composition. I wanted a sketchy kind of look – all done in Photoshop. Corel Painter 9 packed it in on my work computer too. I think it may have something to do with updating the Wacom tablet drivers for the new operating system so I had to use PS.

Red wine and garlic:
garlic red wine gray

Garlic and herb:

And this is the final result. This is only the first concept for the customer so I’m sure they will change it.

The stripes and colour block reach to the top and bottom of the bag so they will form a band across the meat.

Annnnyways it’s almost dinner time. Hope you have a good weekend peeps and I endeavor to finish this week’s CHOW so I will have that ready on Monday.
Ciao!!
