Taste of Melbourne 2010 (pic HEAVY)

Sunday, August 29th, 2010

Hi All!

No drawing for you this week – folks are down and its been busy-busy here.  Today we went to the Taste of Melbourne….photos aren’t as good as last year – the difference between a point-&-shoot and a super DSLR is big – but I’d have to say the event was a lot better. Overall much better organised and laid out. It was easier to navigate and they had quite a lot of things upstairs whereas last year it was only extra seating. Speaking of seating, it was much easier to get a table to park at – or eat standing at one of the astroturf covered box things ;-)

So here’s some silly photos and some of the foods I nommed.

Starting off with some alcohol – nice ;-) (Smirnoff vodka cranberry things. Shuddup!)

Taste of Melb 2010

Pistachio panna cotta & caramel salted popcorn from Sarti. Tasty and not too sweet

Taste of Melb 2010

Crowd shot – it was busy but not unbearably so. You never had to wait long to get your hands on some yums. This was taken at the start when the doors had only just opened.

Taste of Melb 2010

Yellow curry of wagyu beef w/ cucumber relish from Longrain. This was tasty indeed. And a very generous portion.

Taste of Melb 2010

Pork BELLEH!! Omg. With peas, wild sorrel coulis, purple potato and fromage frais from Embrasse. This was super yum but probably could have had a dash more seasoning in the pork crumb. But gee, I really love pork belleh (scuse my horrid shiny thumb – I’d just got a free hand treatment thingo which left moisturiser on my hands)

Dad making a difficult decision….

Taste of Melb 2010

Smoked duck, apple & walnut rillettes from Libertine. Interesting. Toasts where a bit too crispy but the flavours were nice.

Taste of Melb 2010

Truffle rabbit agnolotti w/ game consomme again from Libertine. This was the better dish of the two.

Taste of Melb 2010

Ben & Jerry’s ice cream. I retract my earlier judgment that B&Js aint all that….Guess I just tried a dud flavour the first time cos this was YUM!! Phish Food (the choc one) was a clear winner with choc bits, caramel AND marshmallow. *drool*

Taste of Melb 2010

Get in my belleh!!! ;-)

Taste of Melb 2010

Blurry photo of vanilla panna cotta w/ blood orange jelly from Mr Wolf. Better than the pistachio one :-D

Taste of Melb 2010

Spicy meatballs w/ freekah, parsley salad & Turkish bread from The European. Tangy and delicious and filling too.

And then we did some wine tasting. Yes, I drank all that. The Mr didn’t finish his share. Pussy ;-)

Taste of Melb 2010

And to finish off with some sweets – from Sweet Treats (I think that’s what they were called). Had some Crowns left. I have such a big dumb head. Heh.

Thanks go to Innocent Bystander and Agenda Melbourne for my tickets. It was definitely a great bonus not having to pay for entry as I really think the price for it is a bit too high.

Hopefully my next post will be drawing related….

Seeya round!

Gra-Fight Club – HUGE post!

Monday, March 29th, 2010

This Sunday I finally caught up with the Melbourne Gra-Fight Club (cool name) – the weekly sketch meet with the peeps from ConceptArt.org (from here-on in referred to as CA cos I can’t be bothered typing it).  The usual routine, an arvo of sketching people passing by and practicing your speed and accuracy. We meet on the steps of the GPO and weather permitting, hang about there or move on to other locations.

I managed to spot Harbour-Master as she waited for a tram and because she’s always dressed impeccably, I had to draw her. Its always the clothes that attracts me to sketch a person – you’ll see that trend in the other drawings I did that day :-D Its a bit of a dodgy sketch cos I was still warming up. Eerrrggh. The one next to it is some more warm ups just of faces.

Gettin the hang of things…

This chick had the weirdest outfit….Shiny black leather/vinyl jacket – biker style….with a long, pale blue tie-dye skirt and weird sandal type things that were like sandals from the ankle down and boots from the ankle up. ODD.

The fat dude at the bottom – well he wasn’t fat. He was just wearing an enormous all weather jacket with equally enormous cargo shorts and then these tiny skinny legs sticking out the bottom.

Now to the final drawings which are quite a bit better. Shows how much you can improve just by warming up. Just like a sports star! Hahahaa.
First…A hipster. Wearing faded double denim that looked vintage. White flappy shirt and t-shirt hanging out…..skinny skinny pants on skinny skinny legs and scuffed boots with white ankle socks (and ankles) showing. Hunched over suitably as befitting a hipster of his pedigree ;-)
And a very sharp looking old gentleman leaning against a pole listening to the folk band that was playing in front of us. He had a cool shape for drawing and was standing very still hehe. I completely FAILed on his face though ha. The chick is a woman that dashed by and I liked her hair but only had seconds to memorise her profile.

These are: a dude in a huge blue chambray shirt with skinny legs poking out from underneath. People with weird proportions are interesting – particularly when those proportions are entirely a result of the clothes they’re wearing.
There was also a little Aboriginal boy who was watching the band. He was holding a football and had his jumper draped and tied over his shoulder like one of those across body bags.
The girl was really pretty and had dyed orange hair and a side ponytail. I wish she had stayed longer because I liked her face – would have been good to get it down more accurately. The others are just more odd proportions.

That was it for the sketching that day. We headed down to see the Ron Mueck exhibition when it started to rain. Fantastic exhibition – if you’re in Melbourne I urge you to get to the NGV before the 18th of April and see it. Only $15 entry. If you don’t know who Ron Mueck is, here is a sample of what we saw:

Phew!! Such a massive post!
Seeya all again soon – oh and my life drawing starts on the 12th of April not the 21st so it’s sooner than I thought! YAY!
Bya!

A bit of an absence

Saturday, September 5th, 2009

Sorry I haven’t posted much this week! My parents are over from Tasmania to visit so I’ve had little time to read or write blogs.

We went to see the Salvador Dali exhibition yesterday which was incredible. The guy was a genius! His work is so intricate and detailed – even in his sketches he would have used the teeniest tiniest pen nib and sharpest of sharpest pencils. I loved his jewelry too. Wow. It’s on til the 4th of October so if you’re in Melbourne, get yourself down to the NGV before it’s too late!

We also had a chance to finally check out Journal Canteen. I wish they were open weekends! The food was so delicious. I had chicken livers. Ew I hear you say! Fear not, they were yummy! And tender mmm. Dad had the veal shank which also practically fell off the bone and Mum and Jonny had the lasagne.

I bought Mum a fancy new digital camera. A bright red little Canon Ixus. Red cos it goes faster. Hehehe. Its so very tiny and cool. Mum’s old camera was bought back in the days they when digital was the new fangled thing and it was a wonder at a whopping 2 megapixel! Haha. How times have changed. Now Mum marvels that she can fit 20,000 2MB photos on an 8GB card – whereas on her old one she could only fit 10. It was about time she got an upgrade :-D

Dad also got a pair of shoes for Fathers day. Dad is really hard to buy for as he really doesn’t have any ‘hobbies’ like golf or football. So I’m glad I could get him something he liked!

Now I can’t leave you with nothing to look at so here is the sketch I drew the other day. This will be what I will work on next week to get finished for you all :-) I’m itching to finish it actually! But Sunday I think I will dedicate to baking and writing a DS game review. So it will have to be Monday I think!

New sketch

Oh and last week I had time to pop into Biba Academy to make my hair just that *little* bit more red! Teehee. It looks bloody awesome now! Very very bright. Yay! Soooo happy with it!
Anyways seeya next week! Hope everyone’s having a fantastic weekend!
