Hiya!!

So today I have for you a whole bunch of separates I’ve made since I had my little (big) blog break.

The skirts are both from the same 40′s Hollywood pattern (red is further down!) – it’s a ten gore and very flattering, though time consuming to make with all those seams. It’s easy to fit though! The seafoam green one is a linen blend or something – it’s got a nice drape to it. The red is a fairly coarse linen that will take some time to soften up. It goes super soft when it’s wet! I wish it would stay that way dry too I’ve added a lapped side zipper and zig-zagged the seams.

Next is a chou neck blouse – a 40′s Vogue pattern most kindly traced for me by the ever so lovely Tamara of A New Ball of String. Made from some leftover poly stuff I originally bought for backing a photobooth for my friends wedding (hehee!)…the fabric is pretty blah to sew and to wear but this was really a wearable muslin. I botched the sleeves but you can’t really tell. Yay for prints! The buttons on the back are my winnings here from Vintage Neccessities on Etsy.

Then comes this little polkadot number that Tamara also traced for me. It also has a button back (this time it’s tiny shell buttons from the same winnings) and a purple polkadot cotton. There are pleats on the front under the collar if you can’t tell

And finally, my favourite top and my favourite outfit right now….This AMAZING Vogue blouse pattern I recently bought off eBay. Has all those exceptional 40′s details like gathering and 5 tiny darts to give each sleeve shape. There back is yoked and the shoulder seam is slightly offset so it sits about an inch forward of the very top of my shoulders. The collar is cut in one and folds down into a very deep V neck fastened with one feature button and a smaller one below that hides under the skirt. Pretty risque actually!

This is the first time I’ve done a sleeve set into a band for the cuff so it’s pretty dodgy! I found the smaller red buttons at an op-shop in Huonville, Tasmania. I suspect they might be quite old and possibly made of celluloid or even bakelite? They are plastic but make a clinky sound when knocked together, unlike other plastic buttons which I have. Hmmm….
Very keen to make some more of this pattern, even though this is quite time consuming too with all the attaching collars, top-stitching and a million darts.

Lots more to catch up on still! I’ve finished a stunning 40′s dress out of navy rayon. A total PITA to work with but it’s turned out good. And today I went fabric hunting and found quite a few goodies – have a look on my Facebook or Instagram for some sneak peeks!

Next – a 40′s wrap dress made of amazing parrot printed rayon – purchased from one of my favourite Melbourne sewists, Sew Retro Rose – seriously she is amazing! The gorgeous stuff she makes is out of this world! She is making a 50′s wrap dress out of the same fabric so I thought it would be great to do a compare and contrast of the decades! Stay tuned peeps!!

Jumping right on back into this blogging thing. Thanks so much for all the comments on my last post It’s good to have support!

This is not a very seasonally appropriate dress for the Melbourne summer. But then again it IS – because this is Melbourne, and hail and gale-force winds can come any time. It was cool enough to wear this today actually. It hasn’t even been washed since I finished it and if you look closely you might see a chalk line or two

Made out of an awesome drapey linen blend my Mum found in an op-shop in Tassie. She rang me quite urgently and sent photos asking if I wanted this and a blue shade of the same material. As if I was gonna say no!

Perfect for this pattern which I bought in winter but hadn’t made up yet because I didn’t have the right fabric.

The buttons are vintage – plastic flowers.
Hand stitched lines along the closure and the sleeves. It’s not as tidy as I would have liked as this cotton embroidery thread was the closest match to the green satin interior of the hood, and kept catching on the weave of the fabric as I was stitching it.

You know what I really love about so many 40′s patterns? So much emphasis on the shoulders, which draws attention away from the hips and so balances out my figure. Yay! This isn’t the case of ALL 40′s patterns (you know how much I love those hip swag type dresses too), but they’re always expertly crafted to flatter.

Why look, I have a sewing post – at last! It’s not the one I intended to write about today…that didn’t happen because yesterday the batteries for the camera went flat as I was about to take pics. And then I found a lipstick stain on my dress. Bummer! So now it’s in the wash and I’m showing you Butterick 6740 (view A) instead.

This pattern isn’t mine – I borrowed it off my epically stylish best friend > Brand New Armour so I could make it for her. And then I made myself one. And then I will make her another – cos it’s such a neat pattern.

It’s SO easy to make – even though it came with no instructions, you don’t really need them. The envelope tells you enough – the neckline gathers into a band which ties to make a bow. The sleeves I faced with bias tape (blue satin in this instance) and they are all cut in one with the bodice.

My fabric is a poly cotton blend found at Savers. It’s nice and lightweight and has just the right amount of body. That said, you could make this shirt in a lot of different weights. The one I made for my friend is much lighter and slightly sheer.

I made a few teeny changes….brought the bust in a bit because this one is big for me and even then it has TONS of ease. The neck band needs to be twice as long!! YES. I don’t know what kind of skinny necks chicks in the 5o’s had but if you followed the pattern, you’d be strangling yourself and not even have enough to make a nice looking bow.

The buttons are amazing blue cut glass – possibly from the 30′s. These came from Etsy and I just love them. The colour is such a vivid and deep blue.

Comes together in a couple of hours…And so flattering. I do need to make more for others – share the love….The variations are endless for this. You could even do a contrast neck band. Or make it out of something quite slinky.

Check out my shoes too. I am so in love with these. They are Miss L Fire (of course), with little raffia flowers on them and a carved wooden heel. I also tried to do something with my hair – only just passed as a moderate success….maybe. I suck at hair! Must keep practising. I saw a girl at a cafe yesterday with an amazing green coat and a fluffy grey fox around her neck – she had long black hair and bangs….I think I want a fringe…Maybe. But it’s one of those things that if it doesn’t work out, you have to live with the blah for months til it grows out. Anyways – the length is getting better….It needs a trim but I will wait a bit longer.

Other news: I have a drawing to post but I’m a bit blah about that too. Might put it up during the week with the final Drawing Salon class results.
The green coat is coming along nicely (check Facebook for a preview). I’m at a standstill now…next week is payday so I will buy some more green wool for the facings and sleeve (I am thinking of re-cutting so they aren’t tapered like in the pattern)…shame about all the wastage of the amazing fabric *sad face*. I’ve put all the seams together apart from the side ones. Which is a good thing because I’ve decided it definitely needs pockets – what kind of coat doesn’t have pockets? – so I will use Tasia’s Cambie Dress pockets and insert them in my side seams. This should be pretty easy. Except I need to make them out of the lining fabric. Which I don’t have yet. I’ve been looking for an interesting rayon stripe but not had much luck. I might just go with a solid colour.
Do you think a rayon lining is a good idea or should I go with silk?
I don’t want anything too thin – my current winter jacket (RTW) has got the crappiest lining that is literally falling apart and it’s only in it’s second season. I know a lot of clothes are ‘throw-away’ these days but is it too much to expect all the components of one garment to at least have the same life span? The outside is fine and holding up beautifully, but each mend I make on the lining, the next day there is another tear. GRR!
So yeh, I want something that’s going to last as long as my coat will. Ideas?

Erm – I probably have more to ramble about but it’s time to hit the sewing machine…

Hi All

So finally I have a creation for you. This is Suzy Pattern’s Antoinette Dress I tested a few weeks back. Took some proper photos today at last.

I probably shouldn’t have left it so long to post about this..cos I’ve forgotten some things about making it!

I did make a muslin of the bodice for this and it was good that I did because I needed to add room in the waist. And looking back on it now, there’s still quite a few tweaks I could make to the fitting. The shoulders could widen a skosh even though I didn’t think they need to at the time. And the skirt could be longer because I like a bit more length there. Plus the ‘backside’ area isn’t perfect.

Yet despite these small things, I do like the dress. It all somehow works and I like the lace pieces. And the vintage 30′s glass buttons at the neck.

Sooooo I don’t really have much else to say. It’s Easter and time for lazy-supreme. I spent Friday making a corset (will show you that soon!) and yesterday finishing it…and faffing. Now I’m gonna faff some more. Cos it’s holidays. And tomorrow I might start sewing the dress I cut out the other day.

Oh hey, I also bought some coloured mechanical pencils….I might even do some sketching soon. I’m super rusty though so nothing I’ve been doing lately is worth showing.

Hi Everyone

Short posting today! Today Suzy revealed her first pattern – one which I was testing…Click HERE to see the real deal…and meanwhile, here is my little preview. I’m not wearing it yet as I don’t have the good camera back to take pics…and let me tell you, a happy-snapper doesn’t compare to the Canon 1Ds Mark II in the slightest….It’s so hard to get a non-blurry photo on the Panasonic. Anyways….a pic:

I’ll post more notes on the construction when I have more photos. The buttons are vintage glass from Etsy. I think they’re from the 30′s.

And look – it’s a dress-form! A RED one – Lady Valet too. Yay! I brought her home on Friday. It definitely makes it easier to display dresses. I haven’t sewn anything yet that needs her but I will very very soon. I can list a whole bunch of stuff on eBay now too. That ought to get me a bit of much needed dosh. I’ll have to find where I put it all first. I think a wardrobe cull is in order.

My new project is the Ooh-La-La Pinup Sew-Along, Corset Garter. I made the muslin last night and it will fit without any alterations…apart from grading it down, which was super easy thanks to THIS post. I’m making it with hook & eyes at the back as that will sit flatter than an eyelet fastening. The fabrics I’m using will be some white and purple irregular polka-dot (yep, more dots!) and pistachio green satin for the trims. I’ll be attaching 6 garter clips instead of 4, when they arrive – and I bought some pre-cut spiral steel boning to make it nice and sturdy. That said, I’m still not sure if I should try and track down some featherbone as I’d be able to wash that at least. The Rigiline plastic boning I bought from Spotlight looks flimsy and crap and I don’t think I want to use that at all.

Hi Everyone!
No sewing or drawing today. Not that I haven’t been doing any. Actually I’ve even done some design work in the last week! Holy crap! Hahaa. And I’ve finished one dress, bar the buttons, and completed the bodice of another. So I’ve been a busy bee.

The only reason I can’t show you the almost completed dress is because I’m currently trying to get the STAINS out made by the “washable” fabric marking texta I used to draw my sewing marks on. So incredibly peeved. There’s pics and irritated posts over on my Facebook page where I post things you won’t see on my blog or on my personal Facebook page…

So instead, today I’m showing you another dress from my vintage collection. I’m wearing it out to High Tea today so I need to impress This is one of the first “investment” vintage pieces I bought. It was purchased on a whim off Etsy via PlanetClaire Vintage – possibly with a little red wine in my system affecting my decision making abilities, since it was certainly more expensive than anything I’d purchased to date. I have this habit of once in a while blowing a huge wad of cash on a dress/outfit I NEED to have with the excuse that it’s an “investment” and I’m preserving a slice of fashion history. Which in some sense is true…and the bills all get paid AND I donate to charity monthly so yes I’m justifying my purchases

It’s one of my favourite dresses still even though it doesn’t get worn that often – mostly because it’s quite memorable I love the embroidery on it and the little mother-of-pearl accents on the collar. It’s made of a nice heavy linen and is really comfortable and fits so nice.

It came with it’s own belt too but I’ve swapped it out with this pink one I made last week, to go with my shoes Since the shoes were such a score, I thought a belt would go well with them and what better than to make one. I just bought a piece of cotton chino fabric from Lincraft and used a vintage navy buckle from my stash (bought at L’uccello). New accessory in less than one hour! And I realise now that pink goes with a LOT of my clothes. Yay!

Oh and the kitties were hanging around today while I took pics…pics taken on the other side of the room from the usual since my dress is too much the same colour as our couch hehe

Well that’s about it for today. Next week you just might get a new creation. Or even some of the design work I’ve done.

As promised – here are some pics of the navy dress I did a while ago. This is the pattern I used – CLICKY

I’m moderately okay with it – the fabric is stunning. Some kind of linen blend…Just feels really nice on. But I did struggle a bit with the fitting – on account of me rushing when I really have no reason to rush. Let us count the mistakes:

1. I followed the sizing to fit my measurements. Yes this was a mistake because it ended up HUGE. Mostly in the bust. Boo. But the hips are surprisingly too big too. Dammit.
2. I didn’t try the bodice on before attaching the lining – thus I didn’t notice how much too big it was until it was too late to make a tidy change.
3. It has a side zipper….if it didn’t I would have been able to just take in the sides to make it fit better.
4. It has a side zipper – they always sit funny. I don’t have enough confidence to hack into the single back piece to put the zipper there.
5. It’s crooked – because my hack job to make it fit was to take the side seam in on one side only.
6. I rushed. Patience Esz, PATIENCE.

However, there are positives, solutions and things I have learnt for next time (which I am putting into practice right now.

Here are my solutions and things I’ve learnt:

1. I will try on bodices before sewing final seams like sides and shoulders (I’m still sticking to my no-muslin rule)
2. Observations from the fit of this dress reveal that I need to move darts. Almost an inch in closer towards the centre. I think this would help stop the baggy bits around my hips and bust.
3. The next dress I am making suggests both snap fasteners AND a zip for the side seam. I will try using snap fasteners only. These should sit nicer under the arms and I intend to use quite a few of them so there is no gaping.
4. Attaching a lining was nice and easy. I used this method here: Lining a Sleeveless Dress. Which made no sense to me until I actually had the work ready to go and just started doing it.
5. Take my TIME. Go slooooowwwwww(er).
