Portrait Studies – Summer

Tuesday, April 5th, 2011

Hi All!
A quick drawing and a quick post today.

This one took me a few hours (maybe 4?)….Using reference as usual. I loved the light and the fairly simple tones in this.

Summer-final

Typical nose frustrations. That’s what I’ll be working on next. Noses. More noses. More!
Summer-WIPs

Other news…busy busy as per usual. Trying to push through some motivation issues.

It should be a sewing post next? I’m pottering along with a few things. My frenzy has died down to a mild simmer. :-D

Okay – well this is short/long enough. Til next time!!
(sorry for not being wordy today!)

Another pinup….

Hi!

Guess what? I totally WON the dinner with Audrey! Woooo!! It was a pretty splendid night and I did actually manage to hold some conversation. My photos suck – so I’ll be posting those as well as Jonny’s good ones later. But today I have some drawing completed. Another piece where I was all gung-ho at first…then I abandoned it…then I finished it just to be done with it.

Next time, I think I’ll be ready to attempt something original. And spend more hours on it. Definitely have got the hang of Corel Painter’s tools – now to get over my own self-sabotage.
Some work in progress and (shitty) detail shots….

pinup - work in progress

Not a very high level of detail but whatevs…NEXT. :-D

Seeya’s round (Audrey post up soon)

Life Drawing – 19th July

Thursday, July 22nd, 2010

Howdy!

Some life drawing for this week. New model – new techniques. Getting better at getting form out quicker but don’t think I did so well on the last pose this time.

This week we were learning about scale and space…how the size of your drawing on the page affects how the viewer reacts to it. We did an initial drawing of the figure, then “zoomed in” on a particular area. This area we drew small first, and then on the final 10 minute drawing, it was to be as big as we could fit on the page.

19th July-3

Small:

19th July-2

Then as big as we could do it. It doesn’t quite have the same impact on a screen ;-)

19th July

Then, the final pose…which is meh…We did this in two 20min blocks…but then model changed angle ever so slightly the second time round and I just couldn’t resolve the difference. Not the model’s fault either, it was his first time and he did a good job.

19th July-4

That’s all for this week folks!

Life Drawing June 28th

Thursday, July 1st, 2010

Hi Everyone!
Another session of life drawing all done and dusted for the week – and yes I’m only getting this to you on a Thursday! Busy busy week! Work is insanely mad at the moment – the pile of jobs just doesn’t seem to get any smaller even though I’m there from 7am to 5pm every day.

Onto the drawing then….LOTS more progress this week – can’t believe how much I’m loving the class right now. I churned out a heap (this is only a few) and even managed to knock out some decent contour drawings.

We’ll start from the beginning – a whole bunch of 2 minute and then 1 minute poses to loosen up:
28th-june-1

28th-june-2

28th-june-4 28th-june-5

Then onto the contours….They look way different and while line is fun, I think I prefer shading…
28th-june-6 28th-june-7

28th-june-8 28th-june-9
^^^^^^
I’m quite proud of the one on the right :-D

And then the last two poses went for 15mins and then 20mins (or something like that, the last one was long)….Plenty of time to really work on light and shade. Love drawing like this the most as its all tone and I dont have to worry about a perfect line, instead I just kind of pick out the form from the paper. Hard to explain, but thats what it feels like – more like sculpting I guess?

And this one – worked on that knee for quite a while :-D

Until next time then peeps ;-)
Bye!

Life Drawing May 3rd

Friday, May 7th, 2010

Hi!
‘Tis about time I posted these. Friday and I’m showing you Monday’s work.
Terrible quality pics – I’m sorry I just cant get these right! I think next time I will have to go to the trouble of scanning them and stitching them together in PS.

Getting better! Things I need to work on:
* Finishing in time!!! Five minutes should be enough to get the basic form down. Work faster Esz!!
* PROPORTION. As the teach keeps telling us – take a step back and analyse!
* Detail. Knowing which bits to focus on and when.

(in chronological order from the beginning of the night to the final pose)
20mins warm up – 2mins each hands & feet

5mins poses
050610_0021 050610_0022
050610_0023 050610_0025

050610_0026 050610_0027

050610_0028 050610_0029

And these last two were 10mins a piece:

Last one is hard!!

050610_0031

(oh my god these photos are BAD!!! So sorry!)

The model was good – he knew what he was doing and brought along his own props like a bow which helps show muscle tone.
Drawing a man is tricky! Where there is usually curves and smooth lines on a woman it’s all boxes and no definition on a man (waist and hips argh!)

But – ze classes are seriously awesome and our teacher is great. The gallery plans to expand on things by offering intermediate lessons after this course is up, along with perspective and spacial drawing on Tuesdays. Now that’s another thing I haven’t even touched on! So depending on time and budget constraints, I wouldn’t mind doing some of Tuesday’s classes also.

Tomorrow I plan on making a start on a brochure for my parents’ winery – and doing some sketching. Melbourne has finally decided to let winter settle in and staying inside drawing is mighty appealing. That said, I may become desperate for a coffee and I have overdue library books that need returning.
Hope you all have a great weekend!!
:-D

A new drawing. Finished too!! Omg

Sunday, November 15th, 2009

Hi All!
Having a great Sunday? The weather is perfect here in Melbourne – not too hot with a nice cool breeze.
Me and Jonny went to the annual Volkswagon meetup out in Cranbourne. It’s been 60 years since they made the first Kombi so there was a whole cavalcade of them from each year of production. Cool as! We also saw a whole tonne of Bugs and quite a few Type 3′s. Not very many Fastbacks like ours which is a good thing I think – our little car is quite unique! Jonny is full of ideas of what to do with it now. Yay!

So…back to drawing stuff. The last couple of days I’ve been working on this. Referenced from a photo – but she doesn’t really look like the girl in the photo – which I’m okay with. Trying out digital painting in Photoshop and only doing tonal values (black & white). I’m getting the hang of working in PS and may be even preferring it over Painter right now. Crazy huh! Hehe. This took a total of about 3 or 4 hours….lost count after the first hour :-D
I could have worked it a LOT more but thought I should leave it before I overdo it. Kinda like the roughness anyway.
As you can see in the work-in-progress (WIP) pics, I changed her proportions a bit….as I was going along I noticed more things that were a bit out of place.

And the WIPs.

Another little preview

I’ve started on something else. This one is on my home computer – so I have NO excuse to slack off!
Haven’t fully figured out the final outcome but I’m having fun :-D

Well – not much to say today. Better go! Until next time – hopefully I will have something FINISHED to show you ;-)
