How to make a belt without turning your fabric!

Sunday, May 6th, 2012

Hi All!!
Like promised, it’s tutorial time! I won’t say too much and let the pics do the talking. If you have any questions or need clarification, ask me in the comments :-)
This is the easiest way to make a belt to go with your dresses and you only need a narrow, long strip of your fabric, some interfacing, a belt buckle and a snap. Oh – and your sewing machine and thread!
That said, if you had the patience and no sewing machine, you could do it by hand too.
I can knock one of these up in half an hour or so…well – I haven’t timed myself… Hehe.

What I haven’t got is more pics of my dress with the sleeve detail. I’ve been busy this weekend – making up a new dress, to a pattern I’ve used before…and working on my coat. Which is going slowly but that’s ok.

Soon I shall have more drawings for you, that promised sleeve detail and my Cambie Dress (I was another lucky tester!).

Till soon!

Sewing – Mccall 6475 – A very blousey blouse

Sunday, January 22nd, 2012

Hello everyone!

Apologies for the lack of posting last weekend. We didn’t get back from Blaigowrie til quite late. The big ride on the scooter was quite a success…I won’t tell you how I managed to get more scratches in it (eep) but I will tell you that I got down there and back without anything seriously bad happening. For those folks not from Australia, Blairgowrie is about 100kms south of where I live in the inner suburbs of Melbourne (depending on which route you take)…It’s right at the bottom of Port Phillip Bay and is a popular spot for city people wanting to get away for the weekend. Mind you, it’s hardly ‘country’ or even remotely isolated…Melbourne is such a spread out city that the entire trip down the bay is built up with plush beach houses of varying scale and style. :-)
Anyways, we had a good time – playing board games, drinking and just blobbing about. Yay :-)

So on to this week’s sewing project…

mccall-6475-web

This has been the first project for the year following my new resolution of taking my time and finishing things properly. I’m so happy with this top that I can even show you the insides ;-) The pattern is Mccall 6475 from 1946 and I used a cotton blend of some description in a nice orange floral. I don’t usually go for orange but I loved this print as soon as I laid eyes on it. It’s another one from Savers from way back. The fabric has a really great drape to it and is soft and airy. It may be a rayon/cotton blend…Not sure. It washes ok from the little swatch I tested….so who knows what’s in it.

A few notes about the pattern and finishing:

    • I made view C which you can’t see on the cover but the only difference from view B is the peplum at the bottom isn’t gathered as it’s designed to fit under a skirt.
    • I don’t think this would work with anything but a super drapey fabric. There’s a lot of gathering that needs to fall nicely. I’m happy with my fabric choice!
    • It’s VERY blousey – considering how small the size is, and it IS meant to be roomy, but there’s a LOT of room. Tight, structured waist definition is absolutely essential for styling this!
    • The cute details are a bit lost in this print but I would love to make this out of a plain, maybe even sheer fabric :-)

mccall-6475_0008

    • I finished as many seams as I could with rayon seam binding.
    • The side seams are zig-zag stitched because I ran out of that colour seam binding!
    • I made a narrow hem finished by hand.
    • The side closure consists of three snaps and a hook & eye on a placket. This is SO much better than a zip – And yes I will keep going on about that forever.
    • I omitted the shoulder pads….for obvious reasons. I guess some light ones wouldn’t look too bad and they are very much essential for the era…One day I will make some and see how they look.

Yay! I’m really pleased with this top and I definitely want to make more versions of it. It took about a weekend to do – The bound seams were fairly time consuming but if you omitted those this would take no time at all to make. Once again, this is another one of those 40′s patterns with neat little details. I love how the sleeves attach to the neckline. Mccall’s patterns from the 40′s are especially excellent. Side note: I’m actually waiting on a heap of patterns to arrive from Etsy, eBay and a super special Mccall’s from Patterns From the Past.

Notice I also got my replacement grey shoes from Asos? The 38 fits much better.

Well that’s all for now. I have to start on a new project…I don’t even know if I’ll have anything new to show for next week! I think I’ll have to actually do some drawing! How bout that!

Heh…

Ciao then!

Face Studies – Wreath

Wednesday, August 24th, 2011

Hi Everyone!
A new drawing post so soon after the other one. Wow!! Haha.

I wanted this one to be really quick and easy. Took me maybe 6-8 hours all up.

The ref is Solange by Daniel Gurton for Vs. Magazine July 2011 < – I didn’t read the mag but the pics are kicking round the interwebz….Can’t resist cool hair and flowers. Of course it looks nothing like her as usual but that’s never really my aim :-)

Now I’ve set myself a new project which is a biggie. Starting it tomorrow I hope.

I got an email from my webhost the other day that I’ve used 80% of my bandwidth – this is the first time I’ve got that notice so I guess it means my blog is growing! I don’t get tons of hits – a bit over 100 page views a day sometimes spiking higher and most of the time it’s lower than that. But there are much more frequent spikes than there used to be a year ago so averaged out over the last year, there’s definitely been an increase. SO – if you’ve had trouble viewing my blog it might mean I’ve killed my bandwidth. I’ll be buying more shortly but that’s going to increase the cost of the site quite a bit. Not that I’ll be taking it out on YOU guys hahaha! Ad free blog allll the way ;-)

That’s all for now!! :-D

Where I inadvertently draw Cate Blanchett…

Tuesday, July 12th, 2011

Hiiii!

Soooo I have a drawing for you. A very old drawing. One I started at the end of January to be exact. It’s been hanging around that long and I’m finally sick of it enough to call it done. But – its DONE. It could be a lot better yes…I could have added a whole bunch more pixels in there and got fiddly with the details…..

I’m still kinda hung up on the piece I’m working on now though – and this being unfinished was bothering me. So here it is.

teal-profile-final

Inadvertently you ask? Well I’d found the reference on Tumblr somewhere which had no text to explain who it was. I thought “It kinda looks like Cate Blanchett”. I wouldn’t make a good paparazzo would I? Haha ;-) Derp!

I do like these colours though. And I don’t know how I have my colour settings set up – but when I work in Corel Painter, the image is a lot lighter, so when it gets to Photoshop for my final touches (signature, that’s about all really), the colours become super saturated. Painter, I think is the odd one out in this chain but I like it this way.

I’m still stressing about my creative “skillz” – too scared to set my own projects where I can really explore different methods of drawing and I dunno – just letting go. Maybe I should jump back into the ConceptArt.org challenges. They’ve set up a new section called Illustration of the Week (IOW) which looks promising.

Stash Post #I-should-number-these-things

Friday, May 6th, 2011

Hi!

Mini stash post!
Found this cool-as orange-y floral rayon (??) at Savers today. I think it’s rayon. I really have no idea. But it drapes beautifully and would be perfect for a killer 40′s dress with nice tucks and details. Yeh!

orange rayon_0001-web

Kind of like one of these amazing Trashy Diva dresses. I would just die to have this. But it’s not high on the list of shopping priorities. So I’m happy I found what I did today because I’m sure there’s plenty of patterns kicking around on Etsy which will help me fulfill my dream ;-) Even if I can’t have the exact thing.

squee

Other news:

  • I sold some drawings to the lovely Domestic Divinity which I’m very thankful for. My first Etsy sale! Yay! If anyone wants anything else just let me know and I can set up a listing for you. :-D
  • I’m currently almost finished on one wrap dress. The one out of the blue and white floral sheet. Its proving to be quite comfy and will be perfect for Fiji. It gapes a little in the bust despite the measurements saying it will fit a 30″ bust. That’s pretty tiny and there’s still LOTS of room. Oh wells, it doesn’t look bad. Pics soon.
  • I found the most amazing emerald green wool crepe (almost certain this one is wool crepe) at the Salvos which matches my Miss L Fire shoes exactly. It was fate I tell you. I’m going to make a 40′s dress out of it since the shoes are very 40′s in style. I steamed the heck out of it yesterday to pre-shrink it and I’ve begun the cutting too. It only just squeezes out of the amount of fabric I have.
  • Also scored from my Savers trip today…a white and green Zara v-neck knit – also perfect for the shoes! The thrifting gods are smiling on me I think :-D It will go really great with my sage green knee high socks and a black mini skirt. Or as mini as I’m okay with wearing. Mind you I don’t have this skirt yet. And I haven’t tried the remainder of this outfit to make sure it’s not too leprechaun…so…It might be FAIL.
  • aaaand finally….I have a drawing almost finished, of a gorgeous young Swedish blogger….once I get over my current hurdles with it. That’s on the plan for tonight :-D

That’s about it. Gee – another longish post when I though I was gonna be quick.

Seeyas!!

Character of the Week – The Magus

Tuesday, February 16th, 2010

Sup!
So this is my entry for this past week’s CHOW – Brief for the project is in my last post (Just to confuse you!)….Overall, I’m pretty MEH about it. Didn’t have enough time to do what I want with it and I suffered from not thinking things through fully again.
I got some great tips from the ConceptArt peeps – Skip the backgrounds for now if you’re unsure about them and watch your values and anatomy. Yup yup got it :-D

School project – Packaging Design

Monday, June 29th, 2009

Hi Everyone!
:-D

Something completely different from me once again!
A few weeks ago I got the CD with my latest schoolwork on it. This year I am going to be doing Certificate IV in Graphics PrePress – its the ‘post apprenticeship’ program which means only a couple more units that need doing. Two of those I am doing at work and the rest (I think three) I will be doing at school. When that will be I don’t know!

The most interesting of the on-the-job projects is the Advanced Typography one. There are two briefs we have to fill. One is a CD cover and the corresponding booklet and the second is this one – A muesli package design. Now this is really my forte I suppose when it comes to graphic design as it’s what I do every day. We don’t print on card but the considerations for food packaging are much the same across the board.

The most important thing is that type has to be legible. A lot of information usually has to be part of the design – things like the Nutritional Information, ingredients, addresses and the various certifications etc. These are often printed quite small and you really have to think about what font you’re going to use. A fail-safe in the food packaging industry is trusty old Helvetica. Many designers I’m sure think it’s boring and unimaginative – but really, nothing compares to Helvetica when you’ve only got a tiny space to fit 10 lines of text in.

Another thing to consider when creating a design for food packaging is colours. With magazine printing, you’re usually going to be able to get away with the standard CMYK (cyan, magenta, yellow, black). However, with packaging you are often working with special brand colours that must be very consistent across very large runs. Think of Bega red, Cadbury purple and Woolworths green. The only way to achieve the consistency you need is by using the Pantone Matching System colours (PMS). Plain CMYK can also get muddy and you don’t get such a wide variety of vibrant colours as you can get with the Pantones.
Also, sometimes you need more than just the colours you can see :-) . In my line of work, for those vacuum sealed smoked hams you see in the fridge at the supermarket we need to add two opaque whites and also a clear varnish. It’s a bit easier to print on paper but it’s often you’ll need a varnish for that too.

Now for my design, the brief was to use CMYK plus two Pantone spot colours. I wanted to try something modern and sleek as it’s not something I’m often allowed at work (don’t ask!!!). The fonts I kept simple, using only Adobe Caslon and Neutraface. I’m loving Neutraface at the moment! It’s got a lot more edge than Helvetica, but it’s still easy to read and has a wide variety of styles within the font like small caps and different weights from thin to bold.
I’m no font genius, but I am absolutely obsessed with them! I can spend the majority of ‘design time’ picking a font. Each one has a personality and they all say a different thing. Neutraface is confident, timeless and cool :-)
I chose Adobe Caslon for it’s beautiful ampersand (the ‘&’ symbol) – this was the basis of the design which I built the rest around. It’s also used in the Jasper’s logo.
The photos on the front I took off www.sxc.hu and comped them together in photoshop. I added the shadows and cut them out. Nothing too difficult there. The photo on the back came with the brief and is completely untouched at the moment.

There are still a few things I think that need tweeking. I’ve got to add a few more lines of text in which I’m a bit puzzled about at the moment. And I’m not too sure about the nutritional panel.

What do you think?

Muesli design

Speaking of apprenticeships and school…. I’m officially finished on the 28th of July! Yippee! I will get a proper salary (not that I’m not getting paid nicely already) and all that jazz. Yay!
