Sewing Bits and Pieces

Tuesday, July 5th, 2011

Hi All!

A bit of a jumbled post today to tell you about a few things I’ve bought and quite a few questions to ask!

Yesterday I popped in to Savers for the first time in a long time (at least two months!) and was overjoyed to find a piece of seersucker (on the far right in the pic) waiting with my name on it ;-) Yay! I love seersucker and I’m pretty sure others do too – I don’t know what’s so awesome about it, but I’m sure my eyes bulged out of my head on spying it on the rack. For only $4 too! There’s not a whole lot of it – just 2m and it’s 36″ wide. That’s 91cm by the way – Just so I can confuse you a bit more with my mixing of imperial and metric.

If I’m really clever, I may be able to squeeze out this dress from the amount I have. Absolutely perfect don’t you think? I may need to use a couple of contrast pieces for the waistband and pockets though.

Also – does anyone have any tips on helping me reduce the size of this pattern?

It’s a vintage 15 so I need to shave about 2 inches off the bust and waist. If I take a piece out of the back do you think that will work? I don’t know how the bust is shaped as yet (Still have to wait for pattern to arrive).

Do I dare make the variation with the open midriff? ;-)

And one last question – Can I iron seersucker or not??

The other two pieces seem to be almost from the same donation – very similar in style! They’re lightweight cottons in the cutest prints. There’s a bit more length in these but the width is narrower. Not sure what I’ll make of these as yet – they’re quite sheer. Ideas?

And finally – Check out my new sweater guard/clip/whatever you call it. So sparkly and red. If you’ve ever watched Glee you’ll know what these are – they hold together your cardigan so you can have it open without it flapping about. This purchase was required after I got myself a little faux fur shrug that didn’t have any clips to hold it together. And I have been wanting one for a while for my regular cardigans. So you may see this in future sewing posts!
Doesn’t the aqua linen contrast well with sparkly red of the clips? I’m so in love with the colour – it’s not even aqua – maybe azure. ;-)

Anyway that was quite the ramble. If any sewists can help with my silly questions it would be much appreciated! Next post will possibly be another sewing one. I doubt I will get my drawing done too soon – It still has a long way to go.

Till soon!

Portrait Studies – Brown Eyes

Sunday, March 6th, 2011

Hi All!

Drawing time! :-D

Amongst all the crazy sewing I *have* been drawing would you believe it. This is something I did just quickly to keep me in the drawing mood while floundering on my other (more detailed) piece….which is also a lot larger. I’ve got such a bad habit of making these much too small.

I used a reference for this of course – and I can’t for the life of me find where I got it from. So I can’t link sorry.

I’ve still got issues with noses. Ergh.

After my current project is finished I’ve got some ideas for something new. Not Your Father’s Pin-Up are running a project where we draw an animal related pin-up which will go into a book to raise funds for the WWF. Info at the link – and yes, I’ve been a member for a little while there. Only posted one thing. Shame on me. This is a good cause so I should participate…and it will give me a chance to do something a bit more creative than these last few pieces. I like the WWF – one of the few charities I regularly donate to. :-D

Sewing projects coming up – that 40′s dress will get finished eventually…its nearly done but I’m a bit meh about it. Also, the charcoal pencil – which was a bit of a drama initially but it’s become the thing I’m most proud of. Currently cut out is some yellow gingham which will become a short sleeve shirt.

Giveaway ALMOST there – come on – one more follower! ;-)

Okay time to go!

Art – omg!! Pinups….

Tuesday, September 7th, 2010

Yaaay finally some work!
Okay so it’s utterly shit.
But that wasn’t my intention to create something great. Trying to pick up the Corel Painter skillz again…trying some new things. I drew this without any initial sketch – something I realised I should be doing after finding it so liberating dropping the linework at life drawing. I was getting all stressed about getting the perfect line all this time, and yet I feel more comfortable pushing blocks of colour around.
The only problem now (there’s always a problem), is that Corel Painter doesn’t behave the way I want it to. Or more so, I haven’t figured out how to make it behave the way I want it to. Hrrmph. *whinge whinge whinge*

ANYWAY….so I started off happy with this…and then when I got to the face it all went bad. And I pottered around….and then I thought “F*** it, just FINISH IT”….the more I do the better I will get huh.
Took about 3 hours all up….copying directly from a Gil Elvgren painting.

And I’m a bit obsessed with pinups right now – I like the skin tones and the shapely legs. Legs are fun to draw/paint. :-D I can hear my ConceptArt readers (think I still have a few of those?) screaming “But the anatomy!!!!”. Hehee – I won’t argue against that – have you seen how small the feets are in these paintings? But oh well….it’s practice.

So here’s the drawing…

Beach

Also – not something I usually do, I’ve added some inspiration pics…and the original. So you can see just how much I failed ;-)

Life Drawing – 9th August

Sunday, August 15th, 2010

Hello :-D

Down to the second last life drawing class (I think). Drapery was the subject this time and how we see the figure differently with clothes on. Drawing clothing can disguise the true form and it can be more difficult to draw ‘across the body’ like you would with a nude. Instead, you can fall into the trap of only drawing the outline which leaves things looking flat.

Warm ups….I think all the ones I scanned are about 30 seconds. Funnily enough, it feels better to use 30 seconds instead of 1 minute per pose for the warm up – gets you loosened up quicker. Our teacher likens these to stretching before going for a jog :-)

The contour and the tone drawing. I did a blind contour this time – not looking at the page while you draw and not lifting your charcoal.

9th august 9th august

I did two drawings again for the final 20/20mins. The first one without any drapery and the second one with. Kinda stuffed up the arm on the first one….

So after tomorrow I think I have no more classes. I’ll need to get back into the self-direction. Get back into this digital stuff. I have a whole bunch of inspiration pics – and lots of ideas ready to go. Need to get off my ass and DO IT.

Bya!

Life Drawing – 2nd August

Sunday, August 8th, 2010

Hii!

Bit late this week huh? ;-)

Not much to say about life drawing for this week – we focused on linework which I’m never that comfortable with.

Warm-ups:

2nd aug 2nd aug2

2nd aug3 2nd aug4

2nd aug4 2nd aug7

Then some longer poses…

2nd aug6 2nd aug5

Then the final – I did 2 different ones in the 2 lots of 20mins we had this time. Only because I wasn’t too pleased with where the first one was going. Boo. And still not too sure about the last one either.

2nd aug8

2nd aug9

For the first time in ages, I’ve attempted to do some drawing outside of my classes. Yeh, I’m that slack. Funny thing I noticed is that I draw VERY differently when I’m muckin’ about at home. I think it’s that I don’t have as much room – drawing with my hand instead of my arm….and having a model is much different to using a photograph for reference. The photograph flattens everything and I can’t ‘feel’ the shape of the form in the same way. If only I could use a real model for reference ALL the time. Wouldn’t that be nice? ;-)

Til next week, seeeeeya!

Life Drawing – 26th July

Wednesday, July 28th, 2010

Hiii!

More life drawing for everyone :-D Colour this time! I had heaps of fun with this lesson and it was good to dig out the pastels – haven’t used them since my uni days! Did LOTS of drawings – the majority of them dreadful – but I have to put the really shit ones up so the half decent ones look a bit better ehehehee.

The quality of photos is absolutely terrible and I apologise in advance – I can’t nuke the levels out of them like I would with a B&W. They look a bit more vibrant in real life – winter sun and all that, crappy camera – hard to take a good pic. But enough of the EXCUSES, time for drawings ;-)

The worst first – 1 min and 2 min warm ups:

26th july18 26th july13

26th july17 26th july16

26th july15 26th july14

Contours – the first was meant to be 7 mins one colour and 7 mins the next but I finished early (always going too fast!) and did the next one quickly. Then 10 mins doing a drawing based on shading and using 3 colours. My third was the background colour heh.

26th july9 26th july8

26th july11

26th july10

Then the final pose – two lots of 20mins. I did the first sketch and realised it was way too big for the page so I scrapped it and started again. Really pleased with the end result – using blue really grounded the whole thing I think. Shame the pics are so craaaaaaaap argh sorry!!

26th july7 26th july6

Some close ups

26th july2 26th july3

26th july1 26th july4

K, that’s enough nekkid man-bum for a day ;-) Until next time!

Sneak peek

Tuesday, March 2nd, 2010

Super quick post today guys – Managed to get sick with a nasty cold/sore throat/runny nose thing and am feeling decidely MEH. Haven’t been sick in over a year (well over!) so I guess it was about due. Boo hiss.

Here is a sneak preview of something I started the other day. If you can guess the blogger then yay to you! You don’t win a prize cos I don’t have one haha. But have fun guessing. Maybe it’s too easy to guess? We’ll see.
Trying out how I go without leaning on the crutch that is linework.

See you all on the other side of this MEHness.
