Poses, pinups and unplugged

Thursday, November 19th, 2009

I’ve been a bad blogger again! Drawing so much and neglecting to post. Eep.

The week has been busy too with the Freelancer Unplugged event last night. We were up til 12 which is late late late and today I’m tired. Was a super duper event – got to meet lots of inspirational and creative people. Check out the site if you do any kind of work that could remotely be called freelancing :-) And if you’re in Melbourne, stay tuned for more meetups!
What was it you ask? Well, a casual get together with a panel of four different freelancers talking about the biz. A good chance to network and find out about what it means to go work as a freelancer. Yay!

Now, on to the drawing. I’ve got two sketches for you today. First is a pose or two for the Concept Art CHOW – Steampunk Harem. What a combination! I’m cutting it fine but I really want to finish something this week. Deadline is Monday US time so if I’m studious on the weekend I might just make it.
The first few are some dodgy ones without reference…I like the face and the other one is trying to do some steampunk details.

Then with a reference from a photo. Head is a bit small though. Much more anatomically correct!

And finally, the tattoo I need finished TOMORROW. I actually like this sketch. Third time lucky eh. Took that many goes to get it looking decent. Now the tricky part of drawing clothes and stuff.

There! Now back to drawing. And then sleep.

Hi All!
Having a great Sunday? The weather is perfect here in Melbourne – not too hot with a nice cool breeze.
Me and Jonny went to the annual Volkswagon meetup out in Cranbourne. It’s been 60 years since they made the first Kombi so there was a whole cavalcade of them from each year of production. Cool as! We also saw a whole tonne of Bugs and quite a few Type 3′s. Not very many Fastbacks like ours which is a good thing I think – our little car is quite unique! Jonny is full of ideas of what to do with it now. Yay!

So…back to drawing stuff. The last couple of days I’ve been working on this. Referenced from a photo – but she doesn’t really look like the girl in the photo – which I’m okay with. Trying out digital painting in Photoshop and only doing tonal values (black & white). I’m getting the hang of working in PS and may be even preferring it over Painter right now. Crazy huh! Hehe. This took a total of about 3 or 4 hours….lost count after the first hour :-D
I could have worked it a LOT more but thought I should leave it before I overdo it. Kinda like the roughness anyway.
As you can see in the work-in-progress (WIP) pics, I changed her proportions a bit….as I was going along I noticed more things that were a bit out of place.

Tangents

Friday, October 30th, 2009

Walking home from the train station today I was thinkin….I’m one of those people that will say something entirely random and off topic pretty much all the time…..cos my brain goes on tangents. One comment will trigger off a skipping train of thought and I’ll pipe up with something that’s not quite related.

But in my mind it is.

Except you don’t know what twisted little path my brain has been on to get to that point. So I just look silly and maybe a little out of touch.

Oh dear. Hehe. So now you know, if you ever meet me….and I say something weird….Either just pretend it’s normal or ignore me entirely. Teeehee.

So what made me think of this? Well I’ve been in a rather strange frame of mind lately. Not playing the Nintendo DS on PT leaves me a lot of time to ponder everything. It wasn’t often I got a chance to do that. Such time alone may be a rarity – do you ever get a chance to just think your own thoughts with no interruption?

It really stimulates the creativity that’s for sure. No more dumbing down my brain and filling it with electronic distractions.

Which leads me to today’s sketch. Nothing fantastic again as this was another quick one. 25 mins on the train using the same pic as yesterday but focusing on the face.

Another daily sketch
…..Time will be precious this weekend – It’s going to be a busy one so I might not get a chance to post. But I’ve been doing well this week haven’t I? :-D
Then it’s WORK on Monday! Argh. While everyone else gets to enjoy a 4 day weekend (for the Melbourne Cup). Oh well. I don’t have leave and I need the cash.
Anyway, I need to finish off some drawings too so busy busy busy busy.

Hope you all have a FANTASTIC Cup weekend and get nice and messy hehee :-)

Rizzo from Grease

Thursday, October 29th, 2009

It’s not quite her yet! A mate at work wants me to draw a sketch for his wife’s next tattoo. She wants Rizzo in this pose. Awesome fun to draw! I haven’t finished it yet – just getting the pose right. Which isn’t quite right yet….The feet need work! Doh!

Then add the right clothes and the right face. Hehe.

I drew this on the train home. Took about 25 mins tops. Inlcuding the first sketch I did which was terrible and too big to fit on the page. So I only show you this :-) And shuddup I know her hands look like claws! Boo! My travel sketchbook is only A5 and with my dreadfully scribbly sketching style it’s hard to do details when I’ve already charred up the page with my heavy mechanical pencil lead. So there ;-)

Rizzo from Grease

More to come tomorrow! I’m halfway through painting a cucumber in Photoshop. It’s going to turn out better than the cherry. Compositionally at least!
Lots of mad crazy posting huh. Seriously can’t stop thinking about drawing lately. Consumes almost ALL my thoughts.

A huge post!

To make up for the time I’ve been gone!

Nothing finished though. Bad I know. So here are some sketches I’ve drawn lately. Lots and lots to work on! Some of these I might flesh out into finished pieces.

Eeee I love this little owl!

This I will definitely turn into something nice. Like the way the face turned out :-D

hands
Some drawings of my hand. I have long thumbs. Weird huh.

Anyway, I’m trying to sketch every day right now. Try and get better at drawing and not get stuck in a rut. Still at a stage where my hands don’t do what they tell them properly and I can’t draw exactly what I see in my head. Can get extremely frustrating I tell you.
I joined up to ConceptArt.org forums too – there’s so many great artists on there and so many valuable resources. I get majorly inspired looking on there!

Other news – Been getting busy in the garden. YES I have a garden! Well, a courtyard! Put in a couple of little screener plants and got some bamboo stuff to put up on the fence so the neighbours don’t stare at us while we’re sitting outside. Teehee. It’s so nice to have a fairly large outdoor area.
Also been making friends with the neighbourhood cats. There is a gorgeous ginger tom called Mango who I coerced into the yard for a pat. It wasn’t hard – he’s very friendly (and just a little bit fat too) and he ran about rubbing against my legs and being cute.
There is also a fluffy one two doors down who dropped himself in front of the door and rolled around baring his furry belly. But he ran off when I tried to open the door and pat him.
Soon I wont have to harrass other people’s cats cos I will have one of my own! Yay!!!

Well I better be off – make some dinner for the hungry boyfriend. Back to normal posting from now on :-D
